DENHOLM


PT 156


Once home to a huge PRR coaling facility, Denholm is now a quiet and secluded part of the mainline. Now that only three tracks remain, the mainline and controlled siding tracks are spaced very far apart which is something one will not see anywhere else. There are a few spots where the railroad is visible from RT 333, but nothing spectacular. I don't recommend trying to photograph trains, but I do recommend that one drives RT 333 from Mifflin to Lewistown (especially if you own a sports car!) Just west of Denholm, the mainline turns into a tight valley, named the Lewistown Narrows.

PT 155.8 - Denholm Scale

One interesting railroad facility still makes a home at Denholm. Conrail installed a weigh-in-motion scale located at PT 155.8 on the controlled siding track. Any coal trains loaded in South Fork, or were not weighed elsewhere, will use the scale. The train crew must keep the speed below 5 mph while weighing. The scale will notify the engineer over the radio if the train is going too fast. Since the controlled siding track is located on the track 2 side of the mainline, the dispatcher has a challenging job to keep traffic moving while crossing loaded coal trains from track 1 to the controlled siding. The control points at Mifflin and Lewistown are utilized to keep higher priority trains on schedule.
